Background information
|
| HIMS was founded in the year 2003 as a non-governmental organization, which works without profit and party affiliation. The association has its headquarters in the region of Arusha; it is however active in the whole of Tanzania. The organization is registered, charitable association in accordance with the Society of Ordinance; it was registered on July 30, 2004 under the number SO 12642. |
The primary motivation behind the work of HIMS results from the conflict with the socio-cultural beliefs and attitudes of the people, who discriminate against women, especially if these women are single mothers and have been deprived of their husband's property. In addition, most family members tend to consider single mothers whose husbands have died of HIV/AIDS as doomed. They are hence completely ignored and are unable to participate in developmental measures.
HIMS is of the opinion that every person has the right to a good life, independent of his or her state of health (UN Convention 1948). The association offers marginalized people help in a holistic manner by working at 3 levels: |
| 1. Supporting individual clients, e.g. widows and orphans |
| 2. Raising awareness in society and sensitization with regard to equality of the sexes. Reduction of discrimination as well the struggle against the abuse of women and girls. |
| 3. Public relations at a national level in order to influence changes in discriminatory practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), as well as to work towards the amendments to laws which affect individual groups directly. |
